“One of the main things that struck me about the firm is the ambition.”

John Donnelly

Responsibility is given to trainees from day one and this is what makes a traineeship at Burness a truly different experience and it is this that allows you to take pride in the work that you are doing. In short, there is a real opportunity to become a vital part of a team, and not spend time on errands or in front of the photocopier.

I came to Burness via St Andrews University and the conversion course at Edinburgh University and have spend the first year of my traineeship in the Corporate Department, firstly in Corporate Finance and latterly in Banking and Funds. I am about to spend the next six months of my traineeship in the Dispute Resolution Department. Both of my last two seats have been in areas that I have specifically requested – the opportunity at Burness to have an input into the future of my traineeship has been of real value to me.

One of the main things that struck me about the firm is the ambition: it’s a place with a real sense of adventure, whether that be chasing clients or tenders which the firm have never won before or a willingness to offer a client something which has never been drafted before. It is this desire to find new opportunities and challenges that makes the hard work worthwhile.
