An Open Mind on Nuclear Power Stations

Published in The Herald, 20 March 2009

The Civil Nuclear Power Policies of the United Kingdom Government and the Scottish Government are flatly opposed. The UK Government policy is clear: that new nuclear power stations should have a role to play in the country’s future energy mix alongside other low-carbon sources, that it would be in the public interest to allow energy companies the option of investing in new nuclear power stations and that the Government should take active steps to open up the way to the construction of new nuclear power stations. The Scottish Government’s policy is equally clear. It does not support the construction of new nuclear power stations in Scotland.

This article discusses both policies and the need for the two Governments to keep an open mind when making decisions relating to nuclear power.
