Do you offer summer placements?

Yes, we offer up to 12 summer placements, split between our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices. These take place between June and August. The legal placements last 6 weeks and you spend three weeks in two different departments.

How am I assessed during my summer placement?

We receive feedback from the team you are based with, one halfway through and one at the end of the placement.

What year do I have to be in before I can apply for a summer placement?

Summer placements are primarily available for 3rd year law students or 1st year students studying for an Accelerated LLB. Sometimes we recruit final year students.

Do you offer ad-hoc work experience?

We offer a limited number of work experience opportunities for secondary school pupils.  For more information please contact a member of the HR Team.

I don’t have any legal experience, will this count against me?

No. We don’t expect you to have had legal experience at this stage of your career in law. That’s why it’s important that you show us evidence of transferable skills in your application.

I’ve applied – when do I hear back from you?

We will have responded to you with a decision by the end of April. We’re not able to give you individual feedback at application stage. If you’re unsuccessful after attending an interview, a member of the HR team will give you detailed feedback.

How many applications do you receive and how many do you interview?

We receive around 200 applications for summer placements, and we interview around 20% of those applicants.

What is the interview process?

After applying, successful candidates will be invited to Aptitude Tests.  If successful at that stage, an assessment centre will be held with a member of the HR team and a Partner including a group exercise.

What areas will I work in during the summer?

During your summer placement you will be based within 2 different departments You’ll spend 3 weeks in either Corporate, Dispute Resolution or Property and then spend your final 3 weeks in another of those departments.

Will I get to meet clients?

We treat our summer students as we would treat our trainees and encourage client contact. Depending on the seat you are based in, you may have the opportunity to sit in on client meetings or conference calls.

I am currently an Erasmus student and out of the country, will this affect my application?

No. We think the Erasmus exchange programme is an excellent opportunity for students and we look upon this very positively in your application.  However, we do like to interview all potential summer students face to face, so please let us know when you will be home during the recruitment period.
